Framing the Session
One of the most important things you guys will have to work on is making sure the Internet is up and running on all laptops. There are a couple of reasons the Internet might go down, and I'm going to show you how to fix that problem. When this happens in your classroom, you guys will be fully trained on how to fix it.
Our wireless Internet signal is transmitted through the access points in the classrooms. If an access point is working properly, then you'll see green lights flashing on it. If an access point is down, you'll see red lights or no lights. If an access point is down, that means an entire classroom will have problems connecting to the internet, and you need to tell me if that is the case. Often, if a computer is having trouble connecting, you will need to reconfigure a computer for the Internet and I will teach you how to do that.
Secondly, in order to use the Firefox Internet browser, you have to make sure that the proxy is configured properly. The proxy is an address that allows your computer to communicate properly with the network. So, I will also teach you how to set the Firefox proxy.
Teaching
When you are reconfiguring the network connection, you need to click on the airport signal. Make sure the airport is turned on. If the airport is turned on and the bars are gray (not black), you will need to reconfigure the Internet. Click on "Other..." The Network name is "DOETWAC00M001vl20g". The capitalization matters. You can use any multiple of 10 between 10 and 90 - you do not need to use 20. The password is 147D092002. After typing this in, click 'ok' and attempt to load a web page.
The second potential problem is that the Firefox proxy is not properly configured. Make sure you are using the Firefox browser, not Safari. Make sure the airport is turned on, and that the bars are black. Once in Firefox, click on Preferences - Advanced - Network - Settings. The automatic proxy configuration must be selected, and the proxy has to be typed in like this: http://proxy.nycboe.org/proxy.pac Spelling counts - do not make a mistake, or the proxy will not read properly.
Guided Practice
Now it's your turn - in groups, work on computers that have an internet connection that is down and a proxy that is disabled.
WORK TIME(Typically lasts about 60–70% of session.)
Getting Started
You guys are going to work on configuring a cart of computers for the internet. Remember that if someone in your classroom comes to you and says their internet does not work, try either of these two strategies and that should fix it.
Participant Activity
Participants will... Step 1 Identify whether the internet problem is one of making a connection OR a proxy Step 2 If a proxy, students will access Firefox and change the proxy. Reload the page to test if it works.
Internet Connectivity for Macs
SETTING THE STAGE (To be reviewed before the session begins.)
Session Overview
In this session, participants will...

Why doesn't the Internet work sometimes?
How can I repair my internet connection?
